Monday, 2/7
The Electric Company; PBS. check local listings. 3rd Season Premiere.
Good Charlotte stops by.
Power Rangers Samurai; Nickelodeon. 7 pm CST. Season Premiere.
The Chicago Code; Fox. 8 pm CST. Series Premiere.
The Shield creator Shawn Ryan brings us this series about police and corruption in Chicago.
The pedigree of this show makes it worth checking out.
Tuesday, 2/5
Only in America With Larry the Cable Guy; History. 8 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Larry goes around and learns about the people of the country by visiting etiquette lessons and frog-jumping contests.
Traffic Light; Fox. 8:30 pm CST. Series Premiere.
All I know about it is it's a comedy about five friends and the differences in their stages of their love lives (don't we have a few new shows this year with that exact premise?).
Top Shot; History. 9 pm CST. Season Premiere.
Wednesday, 2/9
Live to Dance (CBS; 7 pm CST). Season Finale.
Human Target (Fox; 8 pm CST). Season Finale.
Mr. Sunshine; ABC. 8:30 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Matthew Perry stars as a sports-arena manager in this new comedy.
I saw the first 20 minutes or so (pretty much the whole ep) last Spring when it was unveiled during Upfront Week, and it didn't look too bad.
Friday Night Lights (DirecTV 101; 8 pm CST). Series Finale.
The little-show-that-could gets a proper send-off.
Those us with out DirecTV will have to wait a few weeks for the DVDs to come out-- or when NBC airs them.
Justified; FX. 9 pm CST. 2nd Season Premiere.
After last season's finale, Raylan has some 'splainin' to do about the dead bodies he was responsible for. But don't expect an hour of his boss yelling at him because this season's arc begins tonight when he runs into a local crime family who sell the Demon Weed.
This was one of the best shows that aired last year-- and it's not all that tough to jump into. So if you missed last season, don't let that keep you from this one. The writing is spectacular and the actors are wonderful. Highly recommended.
Thursday, 2/10
Ace of Cakes (Food Network; 9 pm CST). Series Finale.
Friday, 2/11

Another attempt to bring the Transformers to the small screen to capture the magic of the '80s.
Friday, 2/11
Auction Packed; NatGeo. 8 pm CST. Series Debut.
Uhmmmm. A reality show about a family of auctioneers.
I just write what I see on paper, people. I don't make this stuff up.

Justified Season Two Trailer
Love the show-- and I was a bit of a Star Wars geek way back, so I like the "Han shot first" nod.
Oh Hellz yeah! Feb 9 can't come soon enough.

Sorry this is late. I spent the weekend in beautiful Duluth, MN-- went back home (yes, even though it's been half my lifetime since I've lived there, I still consider it "home")-- for an exciting weekend.
Friday and Saturday nights, I got to see my first women's hockey games. Great stuff. And the best part was seeing the defending National champs, the UMD Bulldogs, sweep the Bemidji State ladies. Really tight games, and I was happy to see some punches thrown-- just like the good old days of watching the college men in the '80s. Women's hockey is a little more finesse than physical, but those two teams took their shots, and even though they can't check each other, we did get to see a few board crashes. (Not that I advocate the violence over the technique; but it sure is nice to see a physical game...)
But the big reason to visit there was to get into some of the events surrounding the 28th Annual John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon. My wife and I attended the events about ten years ago and finally were able to make the timing work again this year-- and with kids along as well.
Saturday was the Cutest Puppy Contest. The accommodations were a little crowded (took a half hour to get a parking space, and the hallways of the old brewery were a little tight), but you can't beat a building full of puppies (40 entrants-- and dozens more who didn't get there in time). And, being a winter weather area, there were lots of my favorite types of dogs: huskies and malamutes-- and a gigantic Saint Bernard named "Bob" (who took second place in the fan voting. The top three finishers can see seen at 2011 Cutest Puppy.
And Sunday afternoon was the beginning of the full and half marathons. The full marathon is the longest in the lower-48, and the weather was beautiful: sunny and about 15 degrees. It felt warmer than that though, but the snow was still there and perfect (there have been years where the start had to be moved due to lack of snow).
And other than a lack of planning for fans by the marathon people (two busses running from the race to the parking lot; the wait was close to an hour-- and they could have groomed the fan area a little, so it wasn't so hard to walk through-- and bleachers like at the old place the race started at-- would have been nice), it was perfect. Not many athletes will let you hang out with them before the race like mushers and their dogs do. Right up to about a half hour before they were due to leave, fans could walk right up to dogs and pet them and wish them luck-- and ask mushers questions and wish them luck as well.
And when it was time to race, those dogs are crazy. I took lots of pics and videos of the dogs howling and jumping. Some teams were pretty calm, and others needed a team of humans to hold them back from taking-off early. Sled dog marathons can be exhausting-- but those dogs just love it.
If you're interesting at all in that race (would should be ending in a day or two), check out the John Beargrease Race website.
Okay, thanks for indulging me. Here are the premieres:
Tuesday, 2/1
Seriously Funny Kids; Lifetime. 8 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Heidi Klum hosts this show that captures the funny things kids say (some of them are the "darndest" things, if you catch my drift).
One Born Every Minute; Lifetime. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
This show goes behind the scenes at a maternity ward.
Wednesday, 2/2
Extra Virgin; Cooking Channel. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Debi Mazar and husband Gabriele Corcos take their online cooking vlog (Under the Tuscan Gun) and make a show of it.
Thursday, 2/3
If you missed last week's fantastic premiere of Archer Season Two, you can catch it again tonight after an all-new Archer (FX; 9 pm CST). This week, Sterling finds out his mom lost her savings in a Ponzi scheme. Last week, he had to protect an underage hottie who kept hitting on him. And Archer, a guy who will screw just about anything with a vagina, draws the line at underage girls.
Friday, 2/4
Who Do You Think You Are? NBC. 7 pm CST. 2nd Season Premiere.
Sunday, 2/6
There's a little thing called the Super Bowl (XLV) on Fox at 5:30 pm CST that pits The Pittsburgh Steelers against my adopted hometown state team The Green Bay Packers. Should be a good one. I may actually watch it...
If football's not your style, then check out Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl VII. I've found it to be bland beyond ten minutes at a time (show's fault; not puppies' fault), but, c'mon: they're puppies!
And after the game, Fox gives us a special episode of Glee (roughly 9:30 pm-- be sure to overrecord if using a DVR because the game could very well "go long").

Quick Recommendation-- The King's Speech
Normally I'd wait until my quarterly/half-yearly review section, but seeing as how it's in theaters now, I thought I'd mention it.
I saw The King's Speech this weekend. I knew it would be good, but I didn't realize just how good it would be.
Funny thing: I didn't want to see a movie this weekend. I've been getting my teeth kicked in at work for some time now (why I haven't finished my last six months-worth of movie reviews) and was just looking forward to a quiet night at home. But my wife and I found ourselves childless for a night, so we decided to take advantage of it. Not much showing that we knew to be good, and even though I was thinking The King's Speech would be fine to watch at home on Blu-Ray/DVD, I have to say I'm very glad I saw in a theatre. The way the film was shot, seeing the close-ups of Colin Firth on a big screen as he struggled through some scenes as the stuttering Bertie, really highighted the incredible acting he was doing.
Anyway, The King's Speech is about King George VI (whom his family called "Bertie"), who found himself thrust into the throne through a few family events that didn't go his way (he had no desire to be king). Bertie was a good family man and knew him being king would have come from some deaths in his family. He also suffered from a terrible stutter, and it did little to make him seem very royal.
And to add his panic over being a stuttering king, his country was also on the precipice of war. Hitler and the Germans were running roughshod through Europe, and his people needed a king they could stand behind.
Bertie needed someone to help him find his voice, and he finally comes into contact with Lionel Logue, played by Geoffrey Rush, an Australian who has a pretty unorthodox teaching style.
I don't want to give too much away, but it's pretty safe to say the path seems pretty standard: oddball speech therapist offends the Royal, they have a spat, but he realizes that the therapist was making headway. They work together and form a bond neither thought would happen when they started. But even though the plot seems standard enough, the two lead actors brought an incredible depth to their roles-- and to the friendship the two men form.
It's a truly wonderful film, and it's amazing to watch those two actors work their roles as they did, so do yourself a favor and check it out.

Monday, 1/24
RuPaul's Drag Race; Logo. 9 pm CST. 2nd Season Premiere.
And now... a public service announcement:
Tuesday & Wednesday
Turner Classic Movies ends its celebration of Hal Roach Studios this month with some longer-form movies from 7 pm Tuesday to 7 pm Wednesday (CST). Like I noted two weeks ago, there are some real gems in here. I mentioned that Laurel & Hardy's best work were in shorts (because many of the longer films relegated them to bit parts; still funny, but not really what I consider "Laurel & Hardy"), but there are some gems that were closer to an hour. I admit to not knowing all the stars Hal Roach Studos had, but let me lay-out the L&H films in this marathon-- and also a long-form Little Rascals film as well.
Tuesday, 1/25
***7 pm CST-- Sons of the Desert.
Stan and Ollie lie to their wives about being sick, so they can attend their lodge meeting.
It doesn't go well.
Highly recommended. This plays out like an hour-long short. The focus is squarely on the duo, just as it should be.
8:15 pm CST-- General Spanky.
An hour and fifteen minute Little Rascals film that finds Spanky, Alfalfa, and Buckwheat in the Civil War.
Wednesday, 1/26
12:45 am CST-- Zenobia.
Only Oliver Hardy is credited here. Not sure if it follows the "L&H" pattern, but I thought I'd mention it.
***3:30 am CST-- Way Out West.
Stan and Ollie in the Old West, doing what they do.
Like "Sons of the Desert", this one is like an hour-long L&H short. Some gags held together by a fairly simple plot. Lots of great stuff here to recommend as well.
4:30 pm CST-- Bonnie Scotland.
A classic film (80 minutes long) that I have to admit, I'm not 100% sure I recall the details well enough to say this is like the others I mentioned. It's one of their more famous films, so it is worth a look.
And now, back to our regular premieres post...
Tuesday, 1/25
Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best?; WE tv. 8 pm CST. Series Premiere.
A reality show that follows Joan and Melissa Rivers.
You know you've been waiting for something like this. Admit it....
A Stand Up Mother; WE tv. 9:02 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Tammy Pascatelli (a former contestant on Last Comic Standing) gets her own reality show.
Wednesday, 1/26
Desert Car Kings; Discovery. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
A reality show that follows the lives of an Arizona auto-parts family-business.
Clean House; Style. 9 pm CST. Season Premiere.
With Tempest Bledsoe taking over for former host Niecy Nash.
Being Erica; SoapNet. 10 pm CST. 3rd Season Premiere.
Thursday, 1/27
Archer; FX. 9 pm CST. 2nd Season Premiere.
Highly recommended. Even if it's "not for everyone", it's still worth a try.
Especially if you like old-school Adult Swim sensibilities, secret agents who screw anything that walks, office personnel who get aroused from being choked, drunk "mad scientist" types, traitorous heads of spy agencies, and a near-complete disrespect for manservants...
Listen: just try it...
Friday, 1/28
Working Class; CMT. 7 and 7:30 pm CST. Series Premiere.
CMT's first scripted series. This one's about a single mom and a nosy neighbor (or coworker, depending on what magazine I read) played by Ed Asner.
Sunday, 1/30
Brick City; Sundance. 7 pm CST. 2nd Season Premiere.
RuPaul's Drag Race; Logo. 9 pm CST. 2nd Season Premiere.

Monday, 1/17
I'm in the Band; Disney XD. 6 pm CST. Season Premiere.
Piers Morgan Tonight; CNN. 8 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Morgan begins his gig in the timeslot Larry King left when he retired.
Being Human; Syfy. 8 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Stop me if you've heard this one: a werewolf, a vampire, and a ghost all live in a house.
Syfy gives a try on remaking a BBC series; one I've heard is pretty good (and is still producing new episodes itself).
Harry's Law; NBC. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Another quirky law-firm drama brought to us from David E. Kelley.
Kathy Bates stars a a patent attorney who gets tired of the grind and starts a criminal defense firm.
I like to give Kelly the benefit of the doubt, but I haven't heard much good about this one.
Tuesday, 1/18
Life Unexpected (The CW; 7 pm CST). Season Finale.
Likely the series finale as well.
I slogged through all of last season and the first 3-4 eps this season, and while I liked the actors and characters, the repetitive plots got to me.
Pioneers of Television; PBS. 7 pm CST (check local listing). 2nd Season Premiere.
Now narrated by Kelsey Grammer.
White Collar; USA. 9 pm CST. Mid-season Return.
Glory Daze (TBS; 9 pm CST). Season Finale.
Wednesday, 1/19
American Idol; Fox. 7 pm CST. Season Premiere.
Now we can finally see if the extreme makeover worked.
And endlessly hear about the results from now until June...
Blue Bloods; CBS. 9 pm CST. New Night & Time.
Hot in Cleveland; TBS. 9 pm CST. 2nd Season Premiere.
Restaurant: Impossible; Food Network. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Dinner: Impossible host Robert Irvine plies his trade with entire restaurants...
James Ellroy's L.A.: City of Demons; Investigation Discovery. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Ellroys hosts this six-episode series that looks at some of Los Angeles' most famous crimes.
Retired at 35; TV Land. 9:30 pm CST. Series Premiere.
A New Yorker leaves the city and his life behind and moves into his parents' retirement community.
I haven't heard good things-- even with George Segal and Jessica Walter as the parents...
Thursday, 1/20
Perfect Couples; NBC. 7:30 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Three couples (who I'm guessing aren't "perfect") are the focus in this new comedy.
If you can call a show that's not funny (from just about everyone who's seen an episode and reported their thoughts) a "comedy"...
Yet another lame attempt by NBC to do something with it's Thursday lineup (remember all the duds the network tried in the Seinfeld and Friends days?).
BUT-- let's all remember that The Office and Parks and Recreation were pretty bad at first as well...
Royal Pains; USA. 8 pm CST. Mid-season Return.
Parks and Recreation; NBC. 8:30 pm CST. 3rd Season Premiere.
Now let's see if all the fans who have had blue balls waiting for this show to return are still as excited about it when new episodes arrive.
Me, I thought Season Two was a huge step-up from Season One, but I don't think it's something to get crazed about like many have been.
30 Rock; NBC. 9 pm CST. New Time.
Fairly Legal; USA. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Life's Sarah Shahi stars as a legal mediator.
Because this is USA, expect a light-hearted romp featuring a "rebel" protagonist who doesn't always follow the rules.
That's about all I know-- and that critics have "fallen" for Shahi's work in the pilot.
Outsourced; NBC. 9:30 pm. New Time.
Friday, 1/21
Medium (CBS; 7 pm CST). Series Finale.
After seven years, the show ends-- but gets a proper send-off that looks ahead a few years.
Fringe; Fox. 8 pm CST. New Night.
Spartacus: Gods of the Arena; Starz. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
This six-episode prequel series was made to give a little more time to the parent show (star Andy Whitfield had to undergo cancer treatment; he's since decided he can't return and the show is looking for a replacement), but it also helped fill-in some of the backstory to the House of Batiatus with a look at the first slave they take on: Gannicus.
Portlandia; IFC. 9:30 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein created and star in this comedy about Portland.
I'm in the Band; Disney XD. 6 pm CST. Season Premiere.
Piers Morgan Tonight; CNN. 8 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Morgan begins his gig in the timeslot Larry King left when he retired.

Tuesday, 1/11
I already mentioned the Laurel & Hardy marathon that starts at 7 pm tonight on TCM. Check out the last post for details.
I, Predator; Animal Planet. 7 pm CST. Series Premiere.
The pilot is called "Great White Shark vs. Cape Fur Seal", so you can guess what the show is about.
Pipe Dream; Golf. 7:30 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Former golf pro Mark Burk tries to get a fresh start on his life, which at its lowest point previously found him living in construction pipes.
The Haney Project; Golf. 8 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Tiger Woods' old coach helps others with their game.
The Game; BET. 8 pm CST. 4th Season Premiere.
The CW cancelled it in 2009, but BET is bringing it back to life.
Lights Out; FX. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
FX brings us a drama in the world of boxing, where a man who suffered a terrible beating five years previously in a title match tries to decide what to do with his life as it falls apart.
Tosh.0; Comedy Central. 9 pm CST. Season Premiere.
Onion Sportsdome; Comedy Central. 9:30 pm CST. Series Premiere.
A sports-channel parody brought to us by The Onion gang. Sweet. I expect it to kick ass the first two or three weeks, and then start sucking.
Wednesday, 1/12
Off the Map; ABC. 8 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes brings us a show about hot doctors with personal issues practicing medicine in some South American country.
Last Woman Standing; Planet Green. 8 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Five female athletes compete in ancient sports around the world.
Thursday, 1/13
Swarm Chasers; Animal Planet. 6 pm CST. Series Premiere.
The pilot looks at the 2010 Australian locust invasion.
Beyond Scared Straight; A&E. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Kids with problems meet convicts with real problems.
Friday, 1/14
Flying Wild Alaska; Discovery. 8 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Don't really know what it's about. An airline-owning family in Alaska is the subject.
The Ricky Gervais Show; HBO. 8 pm CST. 2nd Season Premiere.
Just not as funny seeing it as hearing it.
Real Time With Bill Maher; HBO. 9 pm CST. Season Premiere.
Conviction Kitchen; Planet Green. 9 pm CST. Season Premiere.
Never heard of this show before. A chef oversees a Vancouver restaurant staffed by ex-cons?
I think sometimes these shows are made just to fit into a cool-sounding show title.
Funny or Die Presents; HBO. 11 pm CST. Season Premiere.
Love the website. Hate the TV show.
Sunday, 1/16
Big Love; HBO. 8 pm CST. 5th Season Premiere.
The final season kicks off with the fallout of Bill's election-night revelation.

Laurel & Hardy Marathon January 11-12
Before I get to the Premieres post this week, I wanted to start it out by saying Turner Classic Movies is celebrating Hal Roach Studios this month on Tuesday and Wednesdays. I missed the Little Rascals marathon last week-- sorry about that. But I did catch my favorites for today and tomorrow: Laurel and Hardy.
A 24-hour marathon featuring the duo begins at 7 pm CST on TCM. This gets my highest recommendation. Pure genius on the screen. Sure, some of the plots are a little simplistic and the technical work is a little crude (they WERE in the very beginnings of the film industry), but after watching the 24 hour TCM marathon two years ago, I can also say the work of these two men is pretty timeless. My kids and I laughed like crazy at most of it.
The shorts were usually funnier than the feature-length films (where the boys were usually relegated to comedy relief), and this marathon is all shorts until nearly the end. So check some out; you won't be sorry. And they're usually only 20-25 minutes long, so it's not that much of a time commitment.
I'll note the ones the I liked the best the last marathon I watched with an * before the time. Those are the ones to see, for sure (and *** are the absolute best) . All times are CST.
Looks like there are ones I didn't see before as well, though (my DVD recorder is going to get a workout filling in the gaps to my collection).
7 pm: Thicker Than Water
*7:30 pm: The Fixer Uppers. The boys try to fix up a house for a housewife. Chaos ensues.
8 pm: Tit For Tat. The boys open an electrical repair shop and run into the couple they got in trouble with from Them Thar Hills (airing a little later).
*8:30 pm: The Live Ghost. Stan & Ollie get money to trick men to join in the crew of a haunted ship.
*9 pm: Them Thar Hills. The two vacation in the mountains to cure Ollie's gout and accidentally drink moonshine-tainted water.
9:30 pm: Going Bye-Bye!
10 pm: Oliver the Eighth
*10:30 pm: Dirty Work. The boys start a chimney sweeping business.
11 pm: Busy Bodies.
11:30 pm: Midnight Patrol.
Midnight Wednesday: Me and My Pal
12:30 am: Twice Two
*1 am: Towed in a Hole. The two buy an old fishing boat. Loads of classic bits in this one.
1:30 am: Their First Mistake
2 am: Scram!
***2:30 am: County Hospital. Stan visits (and torments) his pal Ollie in the hospital. One of the best these two did. Highest recommendation.
*3 am: The Chimp. The two sneak a monkey into their room, and the male landlord thinks they're screwing around with his wife.
***3:30 am: The Music Box. The two try to deliver a piano to a hillside home. The best short these two did, in my opinion. It's pure genius. It even won an Oscar. This is the one to watch if you can only watch one.
4 am: Helpmates
*4:30 am: Beau Hunks: After "Jeanie Weenie" dumps Ollie, he decides to join the French Foreign Legion-- and convinces Stan to do the same.
5:15 am: One Good Turn
5:45 am: Our Wife
6:15 am: Laughing Gravy: The two try to hide a dog from their landlord.
7 am: Chickens Come Home
*7:30 am: Be Big! The boys fake illnesses to their wives and then sneak to their lodge meeting.
*8 am: Another Fine Mess. The boys move into a deserted mansion and pretend to be the owner. And then the owner arrives home...
8:30 am: The Murder Case
***9 am: Hog Wild. Ollie's wife makes him install a radio antenna before he goes off with Stan. Not even the clowns on break.com could come up the crazy stuff those two get into. I'm pretty sure Ollie would be in traction for a year after falling off the roof as many times as he did. Great stuff.
9:30 am: Below Zero
*10 am: Brats. Stan and Ollie try to have a nice night of checkers-playing-- but keep getting interrupted by their wild kids (also played by Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy).
10:30 am: Blotto. Stan steals his wife's booze, so he can have a wild time with Ollie.
11 am: Night Owls.
11:30 am: The Hoose-Gow
noon: They Go Boom.
12:30: Perfect Day
1 pm: Men O' War
1:30 pm: Berth Marks
2 pm: Unaccustomed As We Are
2:30 pm: Come Clean
3 pm: Any Old Port
*3:30 pm: Pardon Us. The boys get put in jail for making homemade beer-- and then drive their captors crazy.
*4:30 pm: Pack Up Your Troubles. Two WWI vets promise to help their comrade's orphaned daughter reunite with her family.
5:45 pm: Bohemian Girl

The Larry Sanders Show begins its non-premium channel run on IFC tonight at 10 pm CST.

This time with Jane Bader, the original ('80s) reptilian bitch, along for the ride.
The Biggest Loser; NBC. 7 pm CST. Season Premiere.

Yet another dance competition.
But this one's got Paula Abdul...
Southland; TNT. 9 pm CST. 3rd Season Premiere.
Wednesday, 1/5

Thursday, 1/6
Winter Wipeout; ABC. 7 pm CST. Season Premiere.
Ace of Cakes; Food Network. 9 pm CST. 10th (and Final) Season Premiere.
Friday, 1/7
Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Cartoon Network; 7:30 pm CST) tells a story involving Savage Opress, brother of Darth Maul.

Bob's Burgers; Fox. 7:30 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Fox throws another animated show on its Sunday line-up.
The Cape; NBC. 8 pm CST. Series Premiere.
NBC airs the first two episodes of this series tonight-- and then repeats them tomorrow in its normal timeslot.
A man who is framed for murder dons a super-hero identity inspired by his son's favorite comic book character.
NBC has been hyping this one heavily-- but then they hyped, and soon forgot, The Event this season as well.
Let's hope they don't screw this show up too with moronic scheduling...
Californication; Showtime. 8 pm CST. 4th Season Premiere.
I'm almost afraid to see what perverse situations Hank-- and especially Runkel-- get into this year.
Episodes; Showtime. 8:30 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Matt LeBlanc plays an exaggerated version of himself in this new series about a hot British writing couple (the lady played by one of my BBC America-favorites: Tamsin Greig) who are lured to America to make a U.S. version of their big U.K. hit series. And, as what usually happens in American TV, the remake gets dumbed-down and changed-- and the show ends up being very little like the original.
Shameless; Showtime. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Oddly enough: a remake of a British series.
Hopefully, they keep the changing and dumbing-down to a minimum here.
It does star William H.Macy, so the show has something going for it already...

Premieres and Notables: December 27-31, 2010 and January 1-2, 2011
As usual around this time of the year, it's pretty light.
But I'm sure next week will ramp things up as recent history has shown (used to be January was pretty sparse for debuts; not anymore).
Wednesday, 12/29
I Swear: The History of Dirty Words; History. 8 pm CST. Special.

Million Dollar Money Drop; Fox. 7 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Some sort of game show where up to a million dollars could drop through a hole (don't know if that's good or bad for the contestants).
Wednesday, 12/22
Psych (USA; 9 pm, CST). Season Finale.
I don't lnow how accurate calling it a "finale" is. This show has one of the trickiest schedules I've seen. Three new eps, disappears for a month, comes back with a special episode, and then nothing for three weeks, and then six new eps and then gone for three months... [No, I'm not using actual data for what I wrote; just saying how frustrating it is to try to record-- or watch-- new episodes of this show without a DVR...]
Friday, 12/24
The annual 24-hour airing of A Christmas Story begins at 7 pm CST on TBS.
Saturday, 12/25
NBC reairs the stop-motion animated holiday episode of Community at 7 pm CST. Great stuff-- especially to people familiar with the show as it nails the characters pretty well.
The Haunting Hour; The Hub. 7 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Because nothing says "Christmas" quite like a series based on R.L. Stein's tween-friendly horror books...
Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol; BBC America. 8 pm CST. Special.
I can't recall if the Doctor Who Christmas specials have ever debuted in America alongside their British debuts, but this is pretty cool. The specials are always great single-story adventures, and it'll be fun to see Matt Smith get his turn at one.
This one's based on the classic Charles Dickens tale mentioned in the title.
Starring Michael Gambon-- Michael Gambon-- as a Scrooge-like fellow.

Movies and Movie Stars: A History of Hollywood (TCM; 7 pm CST). Series Finale.
If you've missed any or all of this season's The Vampire Diaries; The CW is repeating them all this week, 2 hours a night, from 7-9 pm CST.
Tuesday; 12/14
The Biggest Loser (NBC; 8 pm CST). Season Finale.
Wednesday, 12/15
In a truly odd promotion effort, Seth Rogan visits Mythbusters (Discovery; 8 pm CST) to discuss myths pertaining to his new movie role as The Green Hornet.
24/7 Penguins/Capitals: Road to the NHL Winter Classic; HBO. 9 pm CST. Mini-series Premiere.
Four eps that follow the two teams as they prepare for the outdoor NHL classic.
Thursday, 12/16
While I feel this season of The Big Bang Theory (CBS; 7 pm CST) has lost a step (jokes too obvious and Two and a Half Men-like in their sexual infantileness), but tonight's ep finds the gang dressed like members of the Justice League. That's gotta be good for some hardcore geek-style laughs.
Burn Notice (USA; 8 pm CST). Season Finale.
Funniest Commercials of the Year 2010; TBS. 9 pm CST. Special.
Since I FF through commercials as a rule, this is my best way to see the best of the year.
And this year the show is hosted by the Old Spice Man himself: Isaiah Mustafa.
FX airs the previously only on DVD It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Christmas Special at 9 pm CST. It's insane and raunchy-- but funny too. Even more than a typical episode.
Saturday, 12/17
Ricky Gervais: Out of England 2-- The Stand-up Special; HBO. 9 pm CST. Special.
I wasn't a huge fan of Gervais' first special. Moderately funny, but nothing close to as brilliant as his scripted comedies.
But I'll tune in as a fan.
And because he promises to tell the most tasteless joke he knows in it...

Robot Chicken (adult swim; 10:30 pm CST) has its third-annual Star Wars special tonight. This one is an hour long-- four times longer than a typical Chicken ep.
And I don't want to make any bold statements here, but the Chicken creators and producers Seth Greene and Matthew Senreich were recently hired as consultants on George Lucas' new animated Star Wars series in development, and I wonder if something will be mentioned about it on this episode.
Probably not-- but I don't want to discount the slight possibility...

Premieres and Notables; November 29- December 5, 2010
First off, Sunday, 11/28, Adult Swim will begin to repeat all of The Venture Brothers from the first ep and air a repeat a week. The first season was my favorite as it focused on Hank and Dean, the amazingly naive teenage sons of a bitter man who could never live up to his dad's almost super-hero existence.
It's a great time to jump on.
Tuesday, 11/30
Strange Days With Bob Saget; A&E. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Saget travels the country and looks into "subcultures", such as this week's look into biker clubs
Sons of Anarchy (FX; 9 pm CST). Season Finale.
Wednesday, 12/1
Terriers (FX; 9 pm CST). Season Finale.
Odds are, it's the series finale.
Hope not 'cause it's been a pretty season, and I think it's just starting to find its potential.
Thursday, 12/2
Brad Meltzer's Decoded (History; 9 pm CST). Season Finale.
Sunday, 12/5
Boardwalk Empire (HBO; 8 pm CST). Season Finale.
The Walking Dead (AMC; 9 pm CST). Season Finale.
A season two is a done deal-- but it sucks that we'll probably be waiting until the end of October for it...

Wednesday, 11/24
Firebreather; Cartoon Network. 6 pm CST. Special
An adaptation of the Image comic about a teenager who gets superpowers from his monster father.
Kung Fu Panda Holiday Special; NBC. 7:30 pm CST. Special
Dreamworks poops out another special based around a holiday-- but Kung Fu Panda is one of my favorite recent animated films, so I'll give it a try.
Friday, 11/26
Young Justice; Cartoon Network. 6 pm CST. Series Sneak-Preview
The proteges of the Justice League form their own team as they train to become heroes in their own right.
(Probably) loosely based on the comic of the same name of the '90s, and it's a cool concept, so it's worth checking out.

"One Win"
I watched an episode of Inside Studio 42 With Bob Costas in December 2009 where he interviewed 90 year-old Baseball Hall of Famer Bob Feller, and I just loved this line, so I thought I'd share it on this special day.
Feller was a monster pitcher. Costas said he was a legend before the age of 20-- and if Costas says something like that about a baseball player, you know it's true. He had amazing numbers. One such number was his win total: 266 games. But in the middle of his career, he missed three full seasons and most of a fourth by serving in the Navy in World War II.
Costas said to him, "At the pace you were at, you would have easily surpassed 350 wins had you not been in the war."
Feller responded with, "I only wanted one win. World War II was the one we had to win." He then went on to talk about his personal as well as the nation's "unrelenting resolve" to win the war, and rattled off the death tolls of some of the battles he was in (note, the fact that he knows those numbers after 60 years is remarkable in and of itself, and tells of the passion he has for the subject).
He finished with, "I'm not a hero of the war. Heroes seldom return from a war. Survivors return from wars. I'm proud of my miltary career, and I don't miss those hundred wins whatsoever. We're a free country, and that's what it was all about."
Were the men and women who lived during the 1940s the "greatest generation"? Yeah, no doubt.
Take a little time to think of where we're at in the country we live in because of our veterans. Those who fought in World War II, as well as those who served before and after because, as Feller said-- and bears repeating: "We're a free country, and that's what it's about."
Thanks to all the veterans-- as well as those serving now.

Favre Further Looks For Attention
Now the guy is taking nutshots like countless men do to get notoriety on the Internet.
Has he no shame?
This happened on October 13-- and even then, no one stopped to ask if he was okay.

Conan; TBS. 10 pm CST. Series Premiere.
The whole late-night thing is finally over.
Conan O'Brien gets his shot at his own show-- and can then prove whether or not he should have been "the guy" at NBC.
Frankly, I tired of it all months ago. Of course, I don't watch late-night talk shows (/"stroke-fests"), so I guess it doesn't matter.
I am curious to see if Conan's legion of fans follow him or if, like most things this blown out of proportion, his show kind of fizzles after a few weeks, and he ends up just "in the pack" by the end of the year.

Harry Loves Lisa (TV Land; 9 pm CST). Season Finale.

Burn Notice; USA. 9 pm CST. Return.

In a pretty cool nod to the past, Teri Hatcher has a cameo as Lois Lane's mother on Smallville (The CW; 7 pm).
[And if you don't "get" the reference, Hatcher played Ms. Lane on Lois & Clark back in the '90s.]
Wizards of Waverly Place; Disney Channel. 8:45 pm CST. 4th Season Premiere.
Saturday, 11/13
There's a Doctor Who Season Five marathon on BBC America from 8 am to 9 pm; everything you need to catch up with the Eleventh Doctor.
Matt Smith had huge shoes to fill when David Tennant left the show, but he did it very well by being both a little more goofy-- and a little more scary. The stand-off he had with alien invaders in his first episode is one of my favorite TV moments. It gave proper respect to the Doctors who came before-- and it solidified the fact that there was a new Doctor on duty.
Highly recommended.
And if you want a look at Smith's predecessor's work, the last story that David Tennant starred in ("The End of Time") airs from 5 am to 8 am this morning (ending with Smith's first appearance as The Doctor). It was both heartbreaking (knowing Tennant's Doctor was going to die) and uplifting (Tennant got a beautifully-written-- and very respectful-- send-off; truly worthy of one of the best to have that role).
This, too, is highly recommended (although it may "mean more" to you emotionally, if you watch all/many of the episodes Tennant worked on first).
Tracy Morgan: Black and Blue; HBO. 9 pm CST. Special.
Morgan gets a stand-up special on the premium net.
Sunday, 11/14
Sarah Palin's Alaska; TLC. 8 pm CST.
I'm really torn over this one. On one hand, you have one of the country's most beautiful states on display. On the other, you've got Palin hosting the show.
I think I'll save my pennies for an Alaskan vacation over seeing and hearing that nitwit any more than I have to.
Tina Fey: The Mark Twain Prize; PBS. 8 pm CST (check local listings). Special.
If you haven't gotten enough Tina Fey yet, then this program is for you.
(I'm not a Fey-hater; but I am a little worn-out with her.)

Shake It Up; Disney. 7:30 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Two tween background dancers on a TV show get their own series that follows their wacky adventures.
Oddly enough, I feel the urge to note that this is a scripted series-- not a reality show.
And I feel sick I had to do that because as I said earlier: anyone can get a reality show nowadays.

Walking Dead Trailers/Clips
Okay, like I said in the premieres post, AMC's The Walking Dead is the show I've looked forward to the most this season. Heck, I can't remember being this excited for a premiere since Prison Break years back.
So I thought I'd post the official trailer again...
This behind the scenes look featuring members of the creative team and the cast...
And this crazy time-lapse clip of one single woman getting made-up to be the "bicycle girl" zombie. Three hours, people. And the end-result is absolutely disgusting.
This show is going all-out to give motion-picture level visuals along with a fleshed-out storyline that can only be told on television...

The British version of the show found itself ripe for a "new take" with this mini-series (not affiliated with the actual Big Brother) that explores the lives of the houseguests-- who have no idea the outside world has been overrun by zombies. Until a live eviction episode...
Make this another case where I hate my current cable provider-- Charter Cable-- for not having IFC as a channel. I get a little bit OnDemand, but the f-ing time it's available is, like, three days. Lame.
Tuesday, 10/26
Melissa and Joey (ABC Family; 7 pm CST). Mid-season Finale.
Wednesday, 10/26
Friday Night Lights; Direct TV. 8 pm CST. 5th Season Premiere.
The final season begins here-- and then reairs on NBC next year.
Recommended.
Thursday, 10/27
Project Runway (Lifetime; 8 pm). Season Finale.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (FX; 9 pm) finally addresses an issue they've avoided all season so far with loose clothing and blocking that keeps viewers from seeing Kaitlin Olson's baby-belly when a Halloween mystery is presented: who knocked up Sweet Dee?
The Fairy Jobmother; Lifetime. 10 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Career specialist Hayley Taylor helps families find work.
Friday, 10/29
What Not To Wear; TLC. 8 pm CST. Season Premiere.
The prem features Facts of Life star Mindy Cohn getting told "what not to wear".
Sunday, 10/31
The Walking Dead; AMC. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
And it's finally here; the show I've most looked forward to this season.
Based on Robert Kirkman (with artists Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard)'s comic book series about some of the surviving humans in a world overrun by zombies. It's a fantastic series about the human experience; love, life, how/why to "go on" during troubled times... And if you don't want to really watch a show that may make you think a bit, that's okay: there are plenty of zombies and death and surprises to keep you entertained. There is a heavy body count to the comic, so we can only assume that many of the people we meet on the show will eventually be killed as well.
I'm not a horror fan, but I am a lover of great storytelling and the man who brought the comic to the screen-- and directed the 90-minute pilot-- is Frank Darabont, who also directed such films as The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. So I think the "great storytelling"-thing is taken care of.
But Darabont knew a good thing when he saw it, so he made sure Kirkman was on-board as a consultant-- and has assured fans that while the show won't be a slavish adaptation of the comic book, the comic will be the backbone to the show. The show may diverge and tell a story we didn't read-- but it will always come back to the source material.
So, the show opens as the comic did: Sheriff's Deputy Rick Grimes gets into a shoot-out and is injured. He wakes up in a hospital and finds it abandoned. He struggles to make his way through the mess of the hospital in search of anyone who can tell him what's going on. He finds no one, so he decides to return home to make sure his wife and son are safe. On his journey home, he finds decaying creatures; some of whom are still able to move-- and want to do him harm.
I urge you to give this show a try-- and watch the first three eps or so, so it gets a fair shake-- and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. And this season is only six episodes, so it's not a gigantic time investment.
So, let's go over this again: Robert Kirkman. Frank Darabont. Producer Gale Anne Hurd. AMC, which has an almost Pixar-like ability to choose the highest-quality shows to air. Premieres Halloween night.
Sounds like a winner...
Highly recommended.
In Treatment; HBO. 8 and 8:30 pm CST. 3rd Season Premiere.
Thintervention (Bravo; 9 pm). Season Finale.
Dead Set; IFC. 11 pm CST. Mini-series Premiere.

A new student believes there is more to the school than what he's been told, so he recruits some fellow students to uncover the truth.
Independent Lens; PBS. 9 pm CST (check local listings). 12th Season Premiere.
America Ferrera now hosts this show. The first ep opens with "The Parking Lot Movie" which profiles lot attendants in a college town.
I am told it's more interesting than it sounds.
Wednesday, 10/20
Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes; Disney XD. 7:30 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Any Man, Wasp, Hawkeye, Black Panther and others, I'm sure, form a team featuring the world's greatest heroes.

Yet another pit-two-people-against-each-other food show. This time it's team people/teams trying to prove their superiority in tailgate cooking.
Lay It Down; Fuse. 10 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Cee Lo Green of Gnarls Barkley (and the singer on the "F*** You" song/video I posted a couple of weeks ago) hosts this new hip-hop and rap chatfest.

Smith talks about turning 40-- and trying to get over a bad movie-- in front a few thousand fans in a New Jersey theatre.
Sunday, 10/24

The detective gets the modern treatment in this 3-part mini.
The Talk; CBS. 1 pm CST. Series Premiere.

This is a cut version of the whole thing, with just the good parts-- and "epic" music.

Two Cars, One Post; Two Nuts, Zero Nuts
This YouTube clip had a great reaction comment. The person wondered why it's only white people who do stupid stuff like this. I thought long and hard about it (at least 30 seconds), and I couldn't think of an exception; I guess it's true: only white people do this stupid crap.
Interesting how about one hundred years from now, there won't be any white people.
I mean, all white males will be sterile after this stuff...

Luther Trailer Plus another new show
Here's the trailer for Luther from BBC One (couldn't find one for BBC America) with a special intro by star Idris Elba:
I haven't seen anything other than the above, but I've read enough reviews and comments to say this one's a winner.
Make sure you check it out. Sunday, BBC America, 9 pm CST.
Six hours total; no big deal.
And I didn't have this one on the premieres list because I don't normally list VH1 (or MTV or CMT or a few other) shows due to the pure crap they usually air. But my music guru told me that Michael Anthony appears a few times on this five-episode show, so I have to watch it now.
And I see it's hosted by the awesome Carrie Keagan, so, yeah: I'm listing-- and watching. She wasn't mentioned in the promo, but I like her work on Attack of the Show, so she's earned a look from me.
Rock N' Roll Fantasy Camp; VH1 Classic. Saturday, 10/16 9 pm CST. Series premiere.
A five episode series about normal Joes and Janes who go to Rock Camp, form bands, write songs, and perform in front of a crowd.

The career of Carlos the Jackal comes back to life in this three-night mini.
Tuesday, 10/12
Private Chefs of Beverly Hills; Food Network. 8 pm CST. Season Premiere.
Nick Swardson's Pretend Time; Comedy Central. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
A new skit-based series from the absurdist comic.
Wednesday, 10/13
Bitchin' Kitchen; Cooking Channel. 9:30 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Nadia G. gets her own show.
No, I don't know what that means...
Thursday, 10/14
Howard's imagination gets the better of him as Katee Sackhoff returns-- and George Takei makes an appearance-- on The Big Bang Theory (CBS; 7 pm CST).
The Vanilla Ice Project; DIY Network. 8 pm CST. Series Premiere.
When Ice took time off from music, he became a home renovator. In this show, he buys, renovates, and tries to sell a house.
I'm just happy we can call him "Ice" again (he hated that name after a while...)
Food Feuds; Food Network. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
All these shows sound the same to me...
In this one, Iron Chef Michael Symon travels the country, pitting two local eateries against each other to see who is "the best".
See? Sounds like every other flippin' show on this channel...
Conspiracy Theory With Jesse Ventura; TruTV. 9 pm CST. Season Premiere.
Friday, 10/15
School Pride; NBC. 7 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Think: Extreme Makeover: School...
Sunday, 10/17
Rubicon (AMC; 8 pm CST). Season Finale.
Paranormal State; A&E. 8 pm CST. Season Premiere.
Mad Men (AMC; 9 pm CST). Season Finale.
Luther; BBC America. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Idris Elba and Indira Varma star in this series about a tortured detective who is trying to solve a murder case.
Like many BBC shows, it takes a little time to get rolling, but it gets there by halfway through the six-episode season.
Hmmm... Maybe the above didn't sell this one very well.
Firstly, Varma is currently on Human Target and also played key roles on Rome and Torchwood.
Secondly, Elba has been all over the place of late. But he'll always be The Wire's Stringer Bell to me; one of the best characters on the best show ever.
This show is highly recommended. One of my two most-looked-forwarded-to shows this season (the other one is premiering soon...)

Disney Blams
I don't watch much on The Disney Channel anymore, but I have seen Blam!s like this:
Now, here's one a fan did that's so wrong, it's hilarious...
I mean, seriously, if you can take one of the saddest sequences in any movie I've ever seen and make it funny, that's pretty good.
