Television Premieres and Notables: October 9-15, 2017

Firstly, one I missed last week (happens all the time, but I can't let this one slip by):

Sunday, 10/8, has the Episodes (Showtime; 9 pm CST) series finale.
It didn't get a ton of love or promotion, but if you ever wonder how complete shit gets onscreen, the first season is a wonderful break-down of how a great idea can be tinkered with to the point where it becomes garbage.
Subsequent seasons furthered the paths that the characters got themselves in-- and took them in even more insane directions.
It was a short series, but consistently hilarious with absolute pitch-perfect performances.

Monday, 10/9

The Robot Chicken Walking Dead Special; adult swim. 12 am (Sunday night/Monday morning). Special.
The Chicken does its thing to one of TV's most popular shows-- and they got many cast members to record voices and play along.

Supergirl; CW. 7 pm CST. 3rd Season Premiere.
After using a weapon that forced her boyfriend from ever returning to Earth, Kara searches for an answer to the question if she is more alien or human-- while a new threat from her home planet rears her head.

Valor; CW. 8 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Sadly, it's not the adventures of Supergirl's banished boyfriend.
This series is about a woman special force helicopter pilot who navigates through the very male culture she is in.

Undercover High; A&E.  pm CST. Series Premiere.
Seven adults go undercover in a high school to learn more about teen life.

Tuesday, 10/10

The Flash; CW. 7 pm CST. 4th Season Premiere.
After Barry's sacrifice at the end of season three, Team Flash regroups to continue saving the city without him.
He'll be back, of course-- and a little changed.
Show EPs have also said the Big Bad of the season won't be a speedster (and may be the Thinker), so there's a nice change after the last three Big Bads.

DC's Legends of Tomorrow; CW. 8 pm CST. 3rd Season Premiere.
After breaking time (whoops) at the end of season two, the Legends work to fix it-- and run into Rip's new team (the Time Bureau), who is trying to do the same thing (in a less bull-in-a-china-shop way).

Wednesday, 10/11

Riverdale; CW. 7 pm CST. 2nd Season Premiere.
I admit I tried it because of the Archie comics connection, but it hooked me with some of the really good performances by the young actors and the twisty plots and connections.
It's not "Archie" in most ways, but it's still an interesting watch.

Dynasty; CW. 8 pm CST. Series Premiere/Reboot
The Carringtons and the Colbys are return in a different form-- but I'm sure there will be plenty of conflict and face-slaps.

Mr. Robot; USA. 9 pm CST. 3rd Season Premiere.

Thursday, 10/12

Arrow; CW. 7 pm CST. 6th Season Premiere.
After the big bang of season five's finale, Ollie rebuilds his team to soldier on as new threats emerge.

The Rundown With Robin Thede; BET. 10 pm CST. Series Premiere.
The Nightly Show head writer-- and frequent on-camera personality brings us her own view of politics and pop culture.

I Love You, America; Hulu. Streaming. Series Premiere.
Sarah Silverman brings us this variety show where she interacts with people around the country to get a feel on what's important to them.

Friday, 10/13

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend; CW. 7 pm CST. 3rd Season Premiere.

Jane the Virgin; 8 pm CST. 4th Season Premiere.

Lore; Amazon. Streaming. Series Premiere.
Based on the Aaron Mahnke podcast, this series reenacts historical stores with a horror bent.

Mindhunter; Netflix. Streaming. Series Premiere.
Using FBI profiler John Douglas's book of the same name as inspiration as a team of profilers try to convince the bureau to change its methods.

Saturday, 10/14

Halt and Catch Fire (AMC; 8 pm CST). Series Finale.

Sunday, 10/15

The Durrells in Corfu; PBS. 7 pm CST (check local listings). 2nd Season Premiere.

White Famous; Showtime.  9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Jay Pharoah stars in this series loosely based on Jamie Foxx's life experiences in the stand-up circuit as he worked to make a name for himself (where even white people know it).

Good Behavior; TNT. 9 pm CST. 2nd Season Premiere.

Sunday, October 01, 2017

Television Premieres and Notables: October 2-8, 2017

Monday, 10/2

TRL; MTV. 2:30 pm CST. Series Reboot.
It's been nine years since it signed off, but MTV is trying again.
This time, they need five co-hosts because Carson Daly is just that damn good to to it himself.

Lucifer; Fox. 7 pm CST. 3rd Season Premiere.

The Gifted; Fox. 8 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Set in the X-Men movie universe, this show follows some teens who exhibit powers-- and are hunted because of it.

9JKL; CBS. 7:30 pm CST. Series Premiere.

The Halcyon; Ovation. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.

Tuesday, 10/3

The Middle; ABC. 7 pm CST. 9th-- and Final-- Season Premiere.

Fresh Off the Boat; ABC. 7:30 pm CST. 4th Season Premiere.
Jessica's worst nightmare came true at the end of last season: she and her family are homeless.

Black-ish; ABC. 8 pm CST. 4th Season Premiere.

The Mayor; ABC. 8:30 pm CST. Series Premiere.
A self-promoting rapper throws his hat in a mayoral race to gain some attention-- and wins.
Yeah, completely unbelievable premise, but, you know, you get what you get.

Kevin (Probably) Saves the World; ABC. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
A directionless young man is told he is to save humanity by a messenger from God; then he works on doing it.
Could either way, but Kevin is played by Jason Ritter, so I... am... in...

Thursday, 10/5

Scandal; ABC. 8 pm CST. 7th Season Premiere.

Friday, 10/6

Once Upon a Time; ABC. 7 pm CST. 7th Season Premiere.
Six cast members didn't return, and the show kinda reboots itself as it focuses on adult Henry.

Superstition; Syfy. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Mario Van Peebles stars as the head of a family funeral-home business which also works to keep the dead and the living separate from each other.

Saturday, 10/7

Spielberg; HBO. 7 pm CST. Special.
A doc looking at the prolific director.

Sunday, 10/8

Madam Secretary; CBS. 9 pm CST. 4th Season Premiere.
