TV Shows 2010-2011 Season

As in the past, I've mentioned the shows I dug the most from June until May.  And, as a matter of honesty, I also mention the TV shows I watched, so there are no "Where the hell is Friday Night Lights?" or any other great show I don't mention.  I watch a stupid amount of television, but I can't watch it all.

Anyway: Here is the list of shows I watched from June 2010 to the end of May 2011, give or take a few weeks where a show may have drifted (such as a show that premiered in May 2011 and is still airing, I may not count until next year).  About ninety shows I at least tried this year.

Sunday, 7/10

Curb Your Enthusiasm; HBO. 9 pm CST. 8th Season Premiere.

The Protector; Lifetime. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Ally Walker stars in this show about a LAPD homicide detective.

Torchwood: Miracle Day; Starz. 9 pm CST. Ten Episode Mini-series Premiere.
After the Children of Earth fall-out, what's left of the Torchwood team finds itself in America to investigate the odd phenomena that no one on Earth can die.   And, in typical Torchwood fashion, it's not all it's cracked up to be.
And it seems as if except Captain Jack, who was immortal, has now lost that ability while everyone has gained it.
This is Torchwood's first adventure that was produced by an American network, and I think they're going to go all-out on it.  Children of Earth was excellent from everything I've read (haven't gotten to it yet myself), and the first two seasons of the show were pretty great. I recommend this mini-series (although at ten eps, it's as long as many cable series seasons).

If you haven't been watching, this show turned a nice corner in the first part of the second season.  Less whining and more living.

Thursday, 6/2

It shares the name of the '80s movie, but the sensibilities of this season are closer to modern takes on the supernatural.  Sexier and scarier, with the "needed" mythology for these genre shows may be worth checking it out.

Catchy tune, too...

Cool-- a show that fits into "history".

30 Rock (NBC; 9 pm CST).  Season Finale.
Okay, people, take this time between your early finale and next season to actually write some funny stuff.  Michael Keaton's appearance two weeks ago was the only reason I kept watching-- and he was wedged in one of the unfunniest episodes of the year (and that's saying something)...

Embedded Video Oops

Hey-- Sorry most of the video clips didn't show up the past few weeks.  Apparently YouTube made some changes that affected the codes I used to embed here.  I went back about a month and fixed the ones I could-- and deleted the ones I couldn't find.

Sorry if the page loads take a bit longer. I decided to show a few weeks of posts at a time to let you catch up.  If I remember, I'll go back to 7 days or so like I had been.

Doctor Who Stands Up to the Atraxi

One of my favorite scenes of this show.  Matt Smith knocks this out of the park in his first episode and proves he can hang with any other former Who actors.

And when the Atraxi probe runs through the previous ten Doctor Whos-- and The Eleventh walks through it.  Cool as Hell.

Check out the Series Six premiere tonight on BBC America.

Thursday, 4/21

Community (NBC; 7 pm CST) has a clip show.  Except the clips are not from old episodes.
Don't think too hard about it. This show has proven it take take an unlikely subject/style and knock it out of the park.  Just enjoy the ride.

Archer (FX; 9 pm CST). Season Finale.
This season was too short.

Friday, 4/22

Ice Pilots; National Geographic. 9 pm CST.  Series Premiere.
A family of pilots transport people and things to remote areas of Canada.

Saturday, 4/23

Doctor Who; BBC America.  8 pm CST. 6th Series Premiere.
I enjoy this show, but I'm a bit surprised by just how excited I am for this new season.

I really dig Matt Smith's turn as The Doctor.  Goofy, funny, but with an attitude that I would normally consider "bad ass" if he wasn't so likable.  One of my favorite examples of this is when he simply said to a young boy who asked if he was afraid of monsters: "No. They're afraid of me."

Series Six ("Season Six" for us Americans) opens with an ambitious 2-parter not only set in America, but (for the first time for the series) filmed in America as he travels to 1969 to help Nixon turn back aliens who are hypnotizing the world's populace.

Sunday, 4/24

Treme; HBO. 9 pm CST. 2nd Season Premiere.
I'm embarrassed to say I haven't watched the first season yet, but I've heard very good things.

After Lately (E!; 10:30 pm CST).  Season Finale.
The first season goes out with a bang with Tori Spelling, Dr. Drew, and Justin Beiber (who has had some great interviews with Chelsea) all showing up.

Friday (Brock's dub)

I'm not really about trying to further humiliate this poor girl.  I mean, I haven't even seen the original (other than a couple seconds-worth of snippets on shows like The Soup).

But I thought this was pretty funny.

Tolerance for our times

Smut Cave used its 40th episode "anniversary" to give us a song about acceptance.

Take it to heart as ebony and ivory can mean sexual synchronicity.

Sunday, 4/17

Game of Thrones; HBO. 8 pm CST. Series Premiere.
George R. R. Martin's books get the HBO treatment.  I can't say I really understand what it's all about (power struggles, kingdoms, castles, epic battles), but there's big-time excitement for this out there. Worth checking out.

Bulldogs NCAA Champs!

Wanted to be one of the first to congratulate the University of Minnesota- Duluth Bulldogs Men's Ice Hockey team for bringing the NCAA Division I Championship to Duluth-- finally.

First-ever such championship for this team.  My longest-loved team finally reached the top!

I may live in Wisconsin now-- but I'm proud to say I'm still a Duluth boy at heart.

The title should clue you in...

Auction Hunter; Spike. 9 pm CST. Season Premiere.

Wednesday, 4/6

Extreme Couponing; TLC.  8 & 8:30 pm CST.  Series Premiere.
I'd watch this because I've saved shitloads of money on DVDs using coupons, but because they didn't call it "X-Treme", I just don't think the show is extreme enough...

Lizzy Caplan guest stars on Mr. Sunshine (ABC; 8:31 pm), so I guess I'll give the show yet one more week before I delete it from the season pass on the DVR...

Breaking In; Fox. 8:30 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Slater goes the comedy route since his last two dramas bombed.  I've been reading that it's actually a great fit.
And the show also stars Bret Harrison (Grounded For Life, The Loop, and Reaper), so I'm in.

Off The Map (ABC; 9 pm CST). Season Finale.

Tori & Dean: sTORIbook Weddings; Oxygen. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
I don't know what's worse: Spelling as an actress-- or Spelling as a constant reality "star" who writes on the side--- and has to work the "Tori" into any freakin' word that it almost works in.
(If you didn't understand the last part: check the title of this show again; I didn't mistype.)
