Premieres and Notables: January 16-22, 2012

Monday, 1/16

The Revolution; ABC. 1 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Tim Gunn and Ty Pennington and others give tips on how to overthrow the government.

Ok-- that's not true.  Like you're gonna watch anyway.  But who the Hell comes up with these show names?  The Revolution. So pompous. It's gonna be a bunch of boys chatting like a bunch of girls. That's novel, right?

Viva la revolucion! (<--or however you spell it. I'm way behind, so I'm not checking.)

Alcatraz; Fox. 7 pm CST.  Series Premiere.
From the mind of J.J. Abrams comes this series about prisoners who disappeared in 1963 and show up decades later in present-day San Francisco to wreak havok.  ...And the three people whose task is to hunt them down and figure out why those returning prisoners haven't aged in all that time.

Heat Seekers; Food Network. 7 pm CST. Season Premiere.

Being Human; Syfy. 8 pm CST. 2nd Season Premiere.

Tuesday, 1/17

Another model show... Yay!
But wait!  This one is about a dude who helps modeling agencies get better, not really on the models.

Justified; FX. 9 pm CST. 3rd Season Premiere.
So-- how to top Margo Martingale's Mags Bennett from last season?  Good question.
Exec producer Graham Yost goes back to one of his earlier shows (the brilliant Boomtown) and hires Neal McDonough and Mykelti Williamson to be the Big Bads this season.
Oh boy-- this is gonna be good.
Extra treat for me (and other fans of her): Carla Gugino has a recurring role this season.

Southland; TNT. 9 pm CST. Season Premiere.
Now with 100% more Lucy Liu.

Ink Master; Spike.  9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Another tattoo show.
But this one is hosted by Dave Navarro.

And Burt Reynolds voices himself in this episode, so now's a good time to give it a shot.

Unsupervised; FX. 9:30 pm CST. Series Premiere.
FX goes for a second animated series; this time about two teens who have parents who aren't around much.

Friday, 1/20

Van Halen "Tattoo"

Well I guess Hell has frozen over.  The long-awaited return of David Lee Roth as a member of Van Halen (beyond a reunion tour) has actually amounted to some new music.  Well, "new" being relative as the basis for their new single "Tattoo" goes way back to at least 1978 from a song that didn't make the cut for their debut album.

Van Halen - Tattoo from Van Halen on Vimeo.

Gotta admit it wasn't what I was hoping for (that'd be Edward destroying a guitar with a new riff the kids would be cutting their fingers trying to imitate), but fans of old school Van Halen should be happy. Doesn't get more old school than to literally pull a song out of the vault.

But maybe Ed learned a little from his last full-time singer when Van Halen 3 failed to make an impact (even though there was some great stuff on it), and a big problem is that Gary Cherone was trying to sound like Sammy Hagar (most assuredly because Mr. Van Halen was trying to point him in that direction).  "Tattoo" may not be a glass-breaking, ass-kicking tune, but it suits Roth's vocal style the past decade or so.

And I'm sure there are a few ass-kickers on the album.  Less than a month left before we find out...

Van Halen's album A Different Kind of Truth drops Tuesday, February 7.

Undercover Boss; CBS. 7 pm CST.  Season Premiere.

The 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards; NBC. 7 pm CST. Special.
Remember a year ago when Ricky Gervais caused a massive flap for his jokes at the Golden Globe Awards?  Remember how many "insiders" wondered how he'd ever survive after having a laugh at the expense of some of the more powerful industry members?
Yeah, he did okay.  He's hosting again.
You see, ratings and buzz trumps a few bad feelings...

Napoleon Dynamite; Fox. 7:30 pm CST.  Series Premiere.
Yeah... an animated series that's probably around six years to late to benefit from the N.D. craze.  But they're giving it a shot anyway.
Gotta be better than that turd Allan Gregory, right?

Robert Chicken airs its 100th episode tonight (adult swim; 10:30 pm CST.)

Maybe pigs will fly after all

For years, whenever I hear any new Van Halen news, I shrug and admit "I'm not holding my breath."

Well, looks like something is actually happening with Van Halen with this little message from the band.

It can with a lame video saying they're going on tour in February with tickets going on sale as early as January 10th.

Okay-- I'm still not going to believe a tour is coming until they set foot on a stage in front of a few people; nor will I believe an album is real until I put it in my CD player.

But it looks like they're making some progress. After years of Edward saying, "Yeah, man, I write all the time. I've got tons of stuff written," some of that writing may actually make it on an album and some songs on a tour.

The True Meaning of Christmas?

Okay. So it's creepy.

But it cracked me up.

Premieres and Notables: December 26, 2011- January 1, 2012

Whoops.

Last week, I missed the Doctor Who (BBC America) marathons on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day; all culminating with the newest Christmas Special at 8 pm CST on the 25th.  Check it out.

I don't know how I could have missed mentioning it last time...

I save Doctor Who for when I'm alert and can only focus on the episode, which puts me behind (namely I haven't seen a new episode since the last Christmas Special).  But, of course, waiting also puts me in the position of finally owning the sixth season on glorious Blu-Ray (thank you, Barnes & Noble for your Blu-Ray 40% off sale combined with a nice 30% off coupon, so the final price was merely "high" as opposed to the usual "ridiculous" for a BBC title...), so that's not a bad way to catch up.

You can catch up on the sixth season just by tuning into BBC America Christmas Day...

Okay, on to the bound-to-be short premieres post:

Monday, 12/26

The Closer (TNT; 8 pm CST). Winter Finale.

Rizzoli and Isles (TNT; 9 pm CST). Winter Finale.

Tuesday, 12/27

Texas Multi Mamas; We TV. 7 pm CST. Series Premiere.

Extreme Couponing All-Stars; TLC. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Twelve couponers compete to find out who is the best.

Thursday, 12/29

Hook, Line and Sisters; TLC. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Two pro fisherwomen (who I'm guessing from seeing the title are sisters-- unless TLC would lie to us) make a go at deep-sea fishing in Alaska.

Friday, 12/30

Infested! Animal Planet. 8 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Bug-bustin' Animal Planet style.
Interesting to see that bugs don't get the pretty "save the species" shows that other animals do...

^^^Ah, now I know why I missed mentioning the Doctor Who Christmas Special last week: because TV Guide wastes page space on the above bullshit shows and doesn't often mention great TV like the good Doctor's show...

Saturday, 12/31

I haven't seen an ep in a while, but I'm sure Phineas and Ferb (Disney XD) is still awesome.  Maybe I'll catch up during the 13-hour marathon that begins at 10 am CST.

Sunday, 1/1

Rachael Ray vs. Guy Celebrity Cook-Off; Food Network. 8 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Ray and Fieri coach celebs for a cook-off.

Angry Boys; HBO. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Finally!!! A new show I don't feel disgust mentioning this week.
Chris Lilley (of the brilliant Summer Heights High) brings us this new show about young men and the troubles they face in Australia. And, as in previous shows, he plays multiple roles.
I am completely pumped about this show. Highly recommended.

Speaking of Chris Lilley, HBO OnDemand and HBO Go are offering both of Lilley's previous series up until the Angry Boys premiere. I haven't caught We Can Be Heroes yet (I fully plan to this week), but Summer Heights High was genius.

I wrote about it here and here.

The Muppets-- film review

I used to post reviews and kinda got away from it because they were tough to write-- especially knowing barely a handful of people actually saw them.

But I am still interested in pointing people toward good movies and away from bad ones.  And when a film is still in theatres, it's important to point people in a timely manner (something I'm terrible at).

So here's a few quick thoughts about the film The Muppets, which opened yesterday:

First off, I'm not a huge Muppets fan. As a kid, I was more interested in the wackiness of the Gonzo stunts-- or the hosts (like Mark Hamill) of the prime time series.  And, as an adult, I never really watched any of the films even though my kids had periods where they liked watching some of the movies again and again.

But none of that mattered to see this new film. As a Jason Segal fan, I knew getting this film produced was a labor of love, and it shows (not to give Segal all the credit; he's just the guy I know who had a large part in making this).  Segal has a way of completely convincing us that he is sincere (when he needs to be)-- no matter how ridiculous the goings-on of a movie-- and it really worked here.

It's the Muppets, so corny is expected, and there was some of that, but there was also some real heart (and non-corny) humor to this one.  Sure, some of the "heart" was a little too overt, but I'll admit to getting a little teary-eyed a couple of times.  Even though it was rushed at times, the story was organic, and other than tying up the film during the credits, it was a good-start-to-finish film with no lagging scenes.

All in all, this is a great movie for kids-- that doesn't insult adults (actually, adults will "get more" from it).  That's extremely rare. The music is really good, and the songs are funny-- another breakthrough.

And I know old school fans will never accept anyone other than Jim Henson as Kermit, but Steve Whitmire was excellent.  Kermit has no facial features that can be manipulated to express emotion, but the mere moving of the arc of his head showed a lot. It's subtle, but effective.

There's nothing terribly original here-- but it's all done so well, I can't give this any less than a B+.  It's worth checking out.

Hardcore Pawn; Tru TV. 8:30 pm CST. Season Premiere.

Burt's parents show up for Thanksgiving dinner on Raising Hope (Fox; 8:31 pm CST).  That should be fun enough, but they went further and cast Lee Majors and Shirley Jones, so it could be legendary.

Wednesday, 11/16

Nick Swardson's Pretend Time (Comedy Central; 9:30 pm CST).  Season Finale.

Thursday, 11/17

Big Shrimpin'; History. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
(The) History (Channel) continues to create reality shows that don't seem to have anything to do with actual history.  This one's about Alabama shrimp fishermen.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold (Cartoon Network; 6 pm CST). Series Finale.
In typical animated-series fashion, another fun show bites the dust.

Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys; Sundance. 8 p CST. 2nd Season Premiere.

Okay-- I know this is wrong, but it cracked me up.

Premieres and Notables: November 7-13, 2011

Monday, 11/7

Poppy Cat; Sprout. 6 pm CST. Series Premiere.

So, last week, How I Met Your Mother (CBS; 7 pm CST) had the return of the Slutty Pumpkin.  This week, the Slap Bet rears its ugly head again.  Not sure who gets it, but I think Marshall still owes Barney two shots across the chops.  And The Ducky Tie also plays a role in the episode.

Tuesday, 11/8

Vietnam in HD; History. 8 pm CST. Mini-series Premiere.
This three-part series feature footage shot by the soldiers themselves and converted to high-def.

Chuck's Week Off; Cooking Channel. 9:30 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Chuck Hughes travels the world and eats stuff.

Wednesday 11/9

Jason Lee begins a multi-episode arc as a romantic interest for Maya Rudolph's Ava on Up All Night (NBC; 7 pm CST).
Maybe Lee's presence on the show can do something about making Ava funny...
Hell, I hope Lee makes the show funny... period.  I have been mildly amused, but haven't laughed yet.

Prophets of Science Fiction; Science. 9 pm CST. Mini-series Premiere.
Exec producer Ridley Scott examines the people and works who made science fiction what it is.
The pilot explores Mary Shelley and her book Frankenstein.

Thursday, 11/10

The Vampire Diaries (The CW; 7 pm CST). Mid-season Finale.

The Secret Circle (The CW; 8 pm CST). Mid-season Finale.

"Culinary recruiter" (I guess it's a real job) Carrie McCully auditions chefs for executive positions at restaurants.

Friday, 11/11

Green Lantern: The Animated Series; Cartoon Network.  6 pm CST. Series Premiere.
I'm not a fan of the look of the series (based on previews I've seen), but it has a ton of potential as a franchise.

Metal Evolution; VH1 Classic.  9 pm CST. Mini-series Premiere.
The network culminates it's "Heavy Metal Day" (11-11-11-- get it? "Cranking it to 11."?)  This 11-part series looks at where heavy metal came from and where it ended up.
