Awake; NBC. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Jason Isaacs stars as a detective who wakes after a car crash and finds he's living in two realities: one in which his wife died, and another in which his son died. He doesn't know which is real and which is a dream.
I caught this pilot last night (OnDemand, Hulu, and iTunes all are offering it), and it's really good. I'm not sure if the premise will hold up week after week, but I'm completely willing to watch to see how it does.
And, if the plot or the premise hadn't hooked me, Isaacs had a fantastic scene near the end where he explained how he's going to process not knowing what's real and what's a dream with this therapist. It showed, right there, what kind of man we're going to be watching.
Saturday, 3/3
DC Nation; Cartoon Network. 9 am CST. Programming block premiere.
The Green Lantern animated series and the return of Young Justice anchor this block, but scattered throughout will also be animated shorts and DC Universe news.
The Aquabats! Super Show! The Hub. 12 noon CST. Series Premiere.
This live-action show features five costumed kids who fight crime-- with rock and roll.
The Essentials; TCM. 7 pm CST. 12th Season Premiere.
Drew Barrymore picks the films for this run.
Oddities (Science; 9 pm CST). Mid-season Finale.
Sunday, 3/4
Army Wives; Lifetime. 8 pm CST. 6th Season Premiere.
GCB; ABC. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Based on the novel Good Christian Bitches, comes this soapy show just in time to take-over for the departing Desperate Housewives.
The commercials have made this look like a lot of fun (and I am fully aware that doesn't necessarily mean anything), and the cast is pretty good.
And one of the characters is named "Carlene Cockburn"...
You just have to give the show a shot with a name like that.
Breakout Kings; A&E. 9 pm CST. 2nd Season Premiere.
And the ads are promising that "one will fall".

Rob Liefeld... Not a very technically good artist
I ran across this recently, and it had me laughing so much, I had tears in my eyes.
I don't really want to perpetuate the beating this dude gets, but I also don't feel too awful about it. I mean, he's got more money than Tony Stark, so he can afford to take an art class or ten...
And, no, you don't need to be a comic book fan to enjoy this.
...But it helps.

Pit Boss (Animal Planet; 9 pm CST). Season Finale.
Sunday, 2/19
The Amazing Race; CBS. 7 pm CST. Season Premiere.

The commercial for this season was funny.
I doubt Trump had anything to do with it.

Eastbound and Down; HBO. 9 pm CST. 3rd Season Premiere.
Rumors are out there that this is the last season...

Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant (you know, the geniuses behind The Office, Extras, and An Idiot Abroad) bring us this series based on an idea from Warwick Davis about his trials as a dwarf actor. If Davis is half the actor Matt LeBlanc was by playing an extreme version of himself (on EpisodesI, this should be awesome.

Smash; NBC. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
You've probably seen the commercials. Heck, I DVR everything, so I can FF through commercials, and I've seen too many commercials for this one.
It's a musical-drama based on the behind-the-scenes goings-on at a Broadway production of the Marilyn Monroe story.
NBC has pushed the crap out of this, but it looks like it could be a winner.
Tuesday, 2/7
The River; ABC. 8 pm CST. Series Premiere.
A nature-show host disappears while filming in the Amazon, and a crew of rescuers go on the hunt to find him.
Sounds like they'll find a lot of weirdness and mysteries...
Doomsday Preppers; National Geographic. 8 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Thursday, 2/9
Swamp People; History. 8 pm CST. Season Premiere.
Saturday, 2/11
Parking Wars; A&E. 8 pm CST. Season Premiere.
Sunday, 2/12
The Walking Dead; AMC. 8 pm CST. Mid-season Premiere.
I'm no W.D. apologist; I'm very aware there are some problems with plot-lines and characters. Or pacing; the first part of the season was pretty slow.
But after the last ten minutes of the mid-season finale with the Holy Shit conclusion of that episode, I'm really looking forward to see what's going to happen next.
This show hooks me for a solid hour every week, and it's a rare show that can do that nowadays.
Check it out.
And if you've missed anything, AMC will air the first seven eps of the season right before the premiere, so you can catch up.
And at 11 pm, Talking Dead continues its look at the aforementioned series. It's not necessary, but it has its moments-- and the show scores some good guests.
Comic Book Men; AMC. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
This reality show is set in Kevin Smith's comic bookstore in New Jersey.
I think there can be some good stuff here, but I can also see this devolving into a mess with ludicrous clerks or customers that make fun of comics.
Some of the best times-- and conversations-- in my life happened at my local comic store in college, so I'm giving it a shot. But I also know that crazy sells, so I'm not expecting much in the way of thought-provoking situations.
Full Metal Jousting; History. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Didn't we just have a reality show about modern-day jousters on some other cable network last Fall?
Is this really a "thing"?

Chuck (NBC; 7 pm CST). Series Finale.
The little show that could finally signs-off after five years.
And as many boneheaded moves the monkeys at NBC make, I do give them credit for keeping this show on the air longer than it probably should have, considering it's usual low ratings.
Spartacus: Vengeance; Starz. 9 pm CST. Season Premiere.

The Revolution; ABC. 1 pm CST. Series Premiere.
Tim Gunn and Ty Pennington and others give tips on how to overthrow the government.
Ok-- that's not true. Like you're gonna watch anyway. But who the Hell comes up with these show names? The Revolution. So pompous. It's gonna be a bunch of boys chatting like a bunch of girls. That's novel, right?
Viva la revolucion! (<--or however you spell it. I'm way behind, so I'm not checking.)
Alcatraz; Fox. 7 pm CST. Series Premiere.
From the mind of J.J. Abrams comes this series about prisoners who disappeared in 1963 and show up decades later in present-day San Francisco to wreak havok. ...And the three people whose task is to hunt them down and figure out why those returning prisoners haven't aged in all that time.

Like you care. --I mean: I sure do.
Justified; FX. 9 pm CST. 3rd Season Premiere.
So-- how to top Margo Martingale's Mags Bennett from last season? Good question.
Exec producer Graham Yost goes back to one of his earlier shows (the brilliant Boomtown) and hires Neal McDonough and Mykelti Williamson to be the Big Bads this season.
Oh boy-- this is gonna be good.
Extra treat for me (and other fans of her): Carla Gugino has a recurring role this season.
Southland; TNT. 9 pm CST. Season Premiere.
Now with 100% more Lucy Liu.
Ink Master; Spike. 9 pm CST. Series Premiere.

It's not for everyone's tastes-- but if you "get it", you'll love it.
And Burt Reynolds voices himself in this episode, so now's a good time to give it a shot.
Unsupervised; FX. 9:30 pm CST. Series Premiere.

Van Halen "Tattoo"
Well I guess Hell has frozen over. The long-awaited return of David Lee Roth as a member of Van Halen (beyond a reunion tour) has actually amounted to some new music. Well, "new" being relative as the basis for their new single "Tattoo" goes way back to at least 1978 from a song that didn't make the cut for their debut album.
Van Halen - Tattoo from Van Halen on Vimeo.
Gotta admit it wasn't what I was hoping for (that'd be Edward destroying a guitar with a new riff the kids would be cutting their fingers trying to imitate), but fans of old school Van Halen should be happy. Doesn't get more old school than to literally pull a song out of the vault.
But maybe Ed learned a little from his last full-time singer when Van Halen 3 failed to make an impact (even though there was some great stuff on it), and a big problem is that Gary Cherone was trying to sound like Sammy Hagar (most assuredly because Mr. Van Halen was trying to point him in that direction). "Tattoo" may not be a glass-breaking, ass-kicking tune, but it suits Roth's vocal style the past decade or so.
And I'm sure there are a few ass-kickers on the album. Less than a month left before we find out...
Van Halen's album A Different Kind of Truth drops Tuesday, February 7.

Maybe pigs will fly after all
For years, whenever I hear any new Van Halen news, I shrug and admit "I'm not holding my breath."
Well, looks like something is actually happening with Van Halen with this little message from the band.
It can with a lame video saying they're going on tour in February with tickets going on sale as early as January 10th.
Okay-- I'm still not going to believe a tour is coming until they set foot on a stage in front of a few people; nor will I believe an album is real until I put it in my CD player.
But it looks like they're making some progress. After years of Edward saying, "Yeah, man, I write all the time. I've got tons of stuff written," some of that writing may actually make it on an album and some songs on a tour.
