Three couples (who I'm guessing aren't "perfect") are the focus in this new comedy.
If you can call a show that's not funny (from just about everyone who's seen an episode and reported their thoughts) a "comedy"...
Yet another lame attempt by NBC to do something with it's Thursday lineup (remember all the duds the network tried in the Seinfeld and Friends days?).
BUT-- let's all remember that The Office and Parks and Recreation were pretty bad at first as well...

Now let's see if all the fans who have had blue balls waiting for this show to return are still as excited about it when new episodes arrive.

This six-episode prequel series was made to give a little more time to the parent show (star Andy Whitfield had to undergo cancer treatment; he's since decided he can't return and the show is looking for a replacement), but it also helped fill-in some of the backstory to the House of Batiatus with a look at the first slave they take on: Gannicus.

Laurel & Hardy Marathon January 11-12
Before I get to the Premieres post this week, I wanted to start it out by saying Turner Classic Movies is celebrating Hal Roach Studios this month on Tuesday and Wednesdays. I missed the Little Rascals marathon last week-- sorry about that. But I did catch my favorites for today and tomorrow: Laurel and Hardy.
A 24-hour marathon featuring the duo begins at 7 pm CST on TCM. This gets my highest recommendation. Pure genius on the screen. Sure, some of the plots are a little simplistic and the technical work is a little crude (they WERE in the very beginnings of the film industry), but after watching the 24 hour TCM marathon two years ago, I can also say the work of these two men is pretty timeless. My kids and I laughed like crazy at most of it.
The shorts were usually funnier than the feature-length films (where the boys were usually relegated to comedy relief), and this marathon is all shorts until nearly the end. So check some out; you won't be sorry. And they're usually only 20-25 minutes long, so it's not that much of a time commitment.
I'll note the ones the I liked the best the last marathon I watched with an * before the time. Those are the ones to see, for sure (and *** are the absolute best) . All times are CST.
Looks like there are ones I didn't see before as well, though (my DVD recorder is going to get a workout filling in the gaps to my collection).

*7:30 pm: The Fixer Uppers. The boys try to fix up a house for a housewife. Chaos ensues.
8 pm: Tit For Tat. The boys open an electrical repair shop and run into the couple they got in trouble with from Them Thar Hills (airing a little later).
*8:30 pm: The Live Ghost. Stan & Ollie get money to trick men to join in the crew of a haunted ship.
*9 pm: Them Thar Hills. The two vacation in the mountains to cure Ollie's gout and accidentally drink moonshine-tainted water.
9:30 pm: Going Bye-Bye!
10 pm: Oliver the Eighth
*10:30 pm: Dirty Work. The boys start a chimney sweeping business.
11 pm: Busy Bodies.
11:30 pm: Midnight Patrol.
Midnight Wednesday: Me and My Pal
12:30 am: Twice Two
*1 am: Towed in a Hole. The two buy an old fishing boat. Loads of classic bits in this one.
1:30 am: Their First Mistake
2 am: Scram!
***2:30 am: County Hospital. Stan visits (and torments) his pal Ollie in the hospital. One of the best these two did. Highest recommendation.
*3 am: The Chimp. The two sneak a monkey into their room, and the male landlord thinks they're screwing around with his wife.
***3:30 am: The Music Box. The two try to deliver a piano to a hillside home. The best short these two did, in my opinion. It's pure genius. It even won an Oscar. This is the one to watch if you can only watch one.
4 am: Helpmates
*4:30 am: Beau Hunks: After "Jeanie Weenie" dumps Ollie, he decides to join the French Foreign Legion-- and convinces Stan to do the same.
5:15 am: One Good Turn
5:45 am: Our Wife
6:15 am: Laughing Gravy: The two try to hide a dog from their landlord.
7 am: Chickens Come Home
*7:30 am: Be Big! The boys fake illnesses to their wives and then sneak to their lodge meeting.
*8 am: Another Fine Mess. The boys move into a deserted mansion and pretend to be the owner. And then the owner arrives home...
8:30 am: The Murder Case
***9 am: Hog Wild. Ollie's wife makes him install a radio antenna before he goes off with Stan. Not even the clowns on break.com could come up the crazy stuff those two get into. I'm pretty sure Ollie would be in traction for a year after falling off the roof as many times as he did. Great stuff.
9:30 am: Below Zero
*10 am: Brats. Stan and Ollie try to have a nice night of checkers-playing-- but keep getting interrupted by their wild kids (also played by Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy).
10:30 am: Blotto. Stan steals his wife's booze, so he can have a wild time with Ollie.
11 am: Night Owls.
11:30 am: The Hoose-Gow
noon: They Go Boom.
12:30: Perfect Day
1 pm: Men O' War
1:30 pm: Berth Marks
2 pm: Unaccustomed As We Are
2:30 pm: Come Clean
3 pm: Any Old Port
*3:30 pm: Pardon Us. The boys get put in jail for making homemade beer-- and then drive their captors crazy.
*4:30 pm: Pack Up Your Troubles. Two WWI vets promise to help their comrade's orphaned daughter reunite with her family.

Let's hope they don't screw this show up too with moronic scheduling...

I can't recall if the Doctor Who Christmas specials have ever debuted in America alongside their British debuts, but this is pretty cool. The specials are always great single-story adventures, and it'll be fun to see Matt Smith get his turn at one.
This one's based on the classic Charles Dickens tale mentioned in the title.
Starring Michael Gambon-- Michael Gambon-- as a Scrooge-like fellow.

While I feel this season of The Big Bang Theory (CBS; 7 pm CST) has lost a step (jokes too obvious and Two and a Half Men-like in their sexual infantileness), but tonight's ep finds the gang dressed like members of the Justice League. That's gotta be good for some hardcore geek-style laughs.
Burn Notice (USA; 8 pm CST). Season Finale.
Funniest Commercials of the Year 2010; TBS. 9 pm CST. Special.
Since I FF through commercials as a rule, this is my best way to see the best of the year.
And this year the show is hosted by the Old Spice Man himself: Isaiah Mustafa.
FX airs the previously only on DVD It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Christmas Special at 9 pm CST. It's insane and raunchy-- but funny too. Even more than a typical episode.

I wasn't a huge fan of Gervais' first special. Moderately funny, but nothing close to as brilliant as his scripted comedies.
But I'll tune in as a fan.

And I don't want to make any bold statements here, but the Chicken creators and producers Seth Greene and Matthew Senreich were recently hired as consultants on George Lucas' new animated Star Wars series in development, and I wonder if something will be mentioned about it on this episode.
Probably not-- but I don't want to discount the slight possibility...

First off, Sunday, 11/28, Adult Swim will begin to repeat all of The Venture Brothers from the first ep and air a repeat a week. The first season was my favorite as it focused on Hank and Dean, the amazingly naive teenage sons of a bitter man who could never live up to his dad's almost super-hero existence.

"One Win"
I watched an episode of Inside Studio 42 With Bob Costas in December 2009 where he interviewed 90 year-old Baseball Hall of Famer Bob Feller, and I just loved this line, so I thought I'd share it on this special day.
Feller was a monster pitcher. Costas said he was a legend before the age of 20-- and if Costas says something like that about a baseball player, you know it's true. He had amazing numbers. One such number was his win total: 266 games. But in the middle of his career, he missed three full seasons and most of a fourth by serving in the Navy in World War II.
Costas said to him, "At the pace you were at, you would have easily surpassed 350 wins had you not been in the war."
Feller responded with, "I only wanted one win. World War II was the one we had to win." Conan O'Brien gets his shot at his own show-- and can then prove whether or not he should have been "the guy" at NBC.
Frankly, I tired of it all months ago. Of course, I don't watch late-night talk shows (/"stroke-fests"), so I guess it doesn't matter.
I am curious to see if Conan's legion of fans follow him or if, like most things this blown out of proportion, his show kind of fizzles after a few weeks, and he ends up just "in the pack" by the end of the year.

There's a Doctor Who Season Five marathon on BBC America from 8 am to 9 pm; everything you need to catch up with the Eleventh Doctor.
Matt Smith had huge shoes to fill when David Tennant left the show, but he did it very well by being both a little more goofy-- and a little more scary. The stand-off he had with alien invaders in his first episode is one of my favorite TV moments. It gave proper respect to the Doctors who came before-- and it solidified the fact that there was a new Doctor on duty.
Highly recommended.
And if you want a look at Smith's predecessor's work, the last story that David Tennant starred in ("The End of Time") airs from 5 am to 8 am this morning (ending with Smith's first appearance as The Doctor). It was both heartbreaking (knowing Tennant's Doctor was going to die) and uplifting (Tennant got a beautifully-written-- and very respectful-- send-off; truly worthy of one of the best to have that role).
This, too, is highly recommended (although it may "mean more" to you emotionally, if you watch all/many of the episodes Tennant worked on first).

Walking Dead Trailers/Clips
Okay, like I said in the premieres post, AMC's The Walking Dead is the show I've looked forward to the most this season. Heck, I can't remember being this excited for a premiere since Prison Break years back.
So I thought I'd post the official trailer again...
This behind the scenes look featuring members of the creative team and the cast...
And this crazy time-lapse clip of one single woman getting made-up to be the "bicycle girl" zombie. Three hours, people. And the end-result is absolutely disgusting.
This show is going all-out to give motion-picture level visuals along with a fleshed-out storyline that can only be told on television...

Until a live eviction episode...
Make this another case where I hate my current cable provider-- Charter Cable-- for not having IFC as a channel. I get a little bit OnDemand, but the f-ing time it's available is, like, three days. Lame.

And it's finally here; the show I've most looked forward to this season.
Based on Robert Kirkman (with artists Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard)'s comic book series about some of the surviving humans in a world overrun by zombies. It's a fantastic series about the human experience; love, life, how/why to "go on" during troubled times... And if you don't want to really watch a show that may make you think a bit, that's okay: there are plenty of zombies and death and surprises to keep you entertained. There is a heavy body count to the comic, so we can only assume that many of the people we meet on the show will eventually be killed as well.
I'm not a horror fan, but I am a lover of great storytelling and the man who brought the comic to the screen-- and directed the 90-minute pilot-- is Frank Darabont, who also directed such films as The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. So I think the "great storytelling"-thing is taken care of.
But Darabont knew a good thing when he saw it, so he made sure Kirkman was on-board as a consultant-- and has assured fans that while the show won't be a slavish adaptation of the comic book, the comic will be the backbone to the show. The show may diverge and tell a story we didn't read-- but it will always come back to the source material.
So, the show opens as the comic did: Sheriff's Deputy Rick Grimes gets into a shoot-out and is injured. He wakes up in a hospital and finds it abandoned. He struggles to make his way through the mess of the hospital in search of anyone who can tell him what's going on. He finds no one, so he decides to return home to make sure his wife and son are safe. On his journey home, he finds decaying creatures; some of whom are still able to move-- and want to do him harm.
I urge you to give this show a try-- and watch the first three eps or so, so it gets a fair shake-- and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. And this season is only six episodes, so it's not a gigantic time investment.
So, let's go over this again: Robert Kirkman. Frank Darabont. Producer Gale Anne Hurd. AMC, which has an almost Pixar-like ability to choose the highest-quality shows to air. Premieres Halloween night.
Sounds like a winner...

This YouTube clip had a great reaction comment. The person wondered why it's only white people who do stupid stuff like this. I thought long and hard about it (at least 30 seconds), and I couldn't think of an exception; I guess it's true: only white people do this stupid crap.
Interesting how about one hundred years from now, there won't be any white people.

Luther Trailer Plus another new show
Here's the trailer for Luther from BBC One (couldn't find one for BBC America) with a special intro by star Idris Elba:
I haven't seen anything other than the above, but I've read enough reviews and comments to say this one's a winner.
Make sure you check it out. Sunday, BBC America, 9 pm CST.

And I didn't have this one on the premieres list because I don't normally list VH1 (or MTV or CMT or a few other) shows due to the pure crap they usually air. But my music guru told me that Michael Anthony appears a few times on this five-episode show, so I have to watch it now.
And I see it's hosted by the awesome Carrie Keagan, so, yeah: I'm listing-- and watching. She wasn't mentioned in the promo, but I like her work on Attack of the Show, so she's earned a look from me.
Rock N' Roll Fantasy Camp; VH1 Classic. Saturday, 10/16 9 pm CST. Series premiere.
A five episode series about normal Joes and Janes who go to Rock Camp, form bands, write songs, and perform in front of a crowd.

Like many BBC shows, it takes a little time to get rolling, but it gets there by halfway through the six-episode season.
Hmmm... Maybe the above didn't sell this one very well.
Firstly, Varma is currently on Human Target and also played key roles on Rome and Torchwood.
Secondly, Elba has been all over the place of late. But he'll always be The Wire's Stringer Bell to me; one of the best characters on the best show ever.
This show is highly recommended. One of my two most-looked-forwarded-to shows this season (the other one is premiering soon...)

For the past decade, Dan's diverse body of work (from feature films to national commercial campaigns) has been featured on Nickelodeon, MTV, the Discovery Channel, and film festivals around the world.
Dan was raised in northcentral Wisconsin and is a 1998 graduate of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts film program. He hates writing about himself in the third person, but pretty much loves everything else about making movies.

Yeah-- I like Agyeman that much. I'd blind-buy a TV series starring her.
